Chapter Eighteen

Ruby - The Land of the Jinn.

We are so close to the city now that I can see more details of the sandstone building that rose high in the sky. The strange dome shaped structure was like something out of a sci-fi movie, and I was struggling to get my head around how they had created such a perfect structure from something so fragile. The number of times I had tried and failed to build a sandcastle when I was a child, and yet somehow this structure has stood strong for decades, defying everything that I knew. Bella has been really quiet since we arrived in the desert region, and I wasn’t sure what had happened between her and Wren on the boat ride over here, but I knew it wasn’t good. The tension between them was unbearable out in the open. It would be even worse once we were stuck inside a building.

It was so hot that I was struggling to see as the salty sweat dripped into my eyes, stinging them and blurring my vision. All I could do was put one foot in front of the other, trusting that if anything came at us, the others would have my back. It was a lot for me to give up that control, but with Noah on my side, I knew that nothing bad would happen to me. He wouldn’t let it. Wren, I was not so sure of. Half the time, I just disliked him because of his arrogance, and the other half just didn’t trust him. For now, though, I was willing to overlook all of it because we needed him, but if he did anything to put any of us in danger, I would kill him.

I was lost in my thoughts, and listening closely to the sounds of the others talking as their boots crunched against the coarse sand. Bella responded abruptly whenever Wren asked her anything, which confirmed my suspicions that something had happened between the two of them. Noah remained silent, but every now and again I heard him laugh at a snide remark Bella made, and I knew that he was enjoying Wren being on the receiving end of her angst. I rubbed my eyes and brow with my arm, and flicked the sweat onto the ground as I moved. Now that I could see clearly, I noticed that we were a lot closer to the city than when I had last looked. I glanced over my shoulder to see how far we had come, and I could no longer see the ocean, or even where we left the boats, and I was worried that we were not going to be able to find them again. We didn’t have time to walk around the planet to get the other things that we needed to do the spell, so we needed the kayaks. I just hoped that Noah and Wren could remember where they had hidden them, even if I couldn’t.

Everything around here outside of the city looked the same, in every direction, and it was disorientating.
